What is it about?
Marathon running is associated with both physiologic stress and a significant cardiac burden. A Mediterranean diet that is rich in polyphenols has been demonstrated to comprise beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. Therefore, we hypothesized that polyphenol-rich beverages can reduce physiological stress levels and cardiac burden in marathon runners. Interestingly, we could not find evidence that polyphenol-rich beverages attenuate marathon running induced physiological stress or cardiac burden. We also did not observe a differential effect based on athletic ability.
