What is it about?
High protein (HP) diets are widely used for weight management in obesity. However there are concerns regarding the effect of HP diet on kidney health. In our study, we examined if various single and mixed source of protein in HP diet has different effects on kidney health. The results reveals that in the context of obesity and mild renal disease, casein, soy protein and a mixed protein have varying effects on renal parameters. However, inclusion of mixed protein sources in a HP diet may mitigate some of the detrimental effects of HP diets on renal damage observed with single protein sources. Given the myriad of detrimental effects of obesity, an HP diet from mixed protein sources that enables weight loss but has only minor risks to renal health appears to be advantageous.
