Healthcare utilization and costs of home mechanical ventilation

What is it about?

The aim of this study was to determine the public and private healthcare utilization and costs associated with home mechanical ventilation (HMV) for individuals living at home in two Canadian proviicnes. This study also examines factors associated with the high costs of HMV.

Why is it important?

This prospective study looked at the detailed healthcare costs and confirmed that there are substantial public healthcare cost savings when facilitating home mechanical ventilation. However, our findings indicated the burden on family caregivers is substantial as well and needs to be considered when making future policy decisions related to HMV.
