What is it about?

Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by low levels of protein in the blood concurrent with high levels of protein in the urine. Many patients with lupus nephritis also have nephrotic syndrome. We combined data from two lupus nephritis trials and demonstrated that patients with nephrotic syndrome were less likely to attain remission of their kidney disease in 1 year compared to patients without nephrotic syndrome. This finding could be due to the fact that patients with nephrotic syndrome have more severe or complex disease that may take longer to improve. Additionally, there is evidence that nephrotic syndrome affects medication pharmacokinetics. Nephrotic syndrome should be taken into account when developing new therapies and clinical trials.
