Face-making: task-specific facial tensions and grimacing in musicians

What is it about?

We describe task-related facial gestures and spasms in professional concert pianists. The facial movements appear only during musical performances. They are probably analogous to performance related tics in children learning to write and, in contrast to pianist’s facial spasms, have no malign significance.
