What is it about?

This interview study describes how some people with lung conditions manage not to go to the ED when they have a worsening of their long term breathlessness. (People needing emergency medical attention for an asthma attack or heart problem were not included in this study.) The patients who successfully avoided going to the ED wanted to have control over their breathlessness, had the ability to cope well with it and to avoid hospital if possible.

Why is it important?

The study was conducted in Australia but it is likely to be relevant internationally, as people suffer with breathlessness the world over and many end up going to the ED. The insights from these patients give us an idea about how some people manage their crises with support from their clinicians. This may inform future research to help people avoid going to the ED through supported self-management.
