We looked at the reasons why Vietnam veterans were hospitalised. The aim was to see what conditions were common, and especially if any could be prevented.

Why is it important?
This was the first complete census of a Vietnam veteran cohort. The results reveal an ongoing problem with drugs and alcohol, with smoking a likely contributor to increased rates of admission with respiratory disease and renal failure.
