What is it about?
Dopamine is used to treat hypotension in pre-term and term neonates. At present when the infusions of dopamine are changed after 24 hours, there is a rapid spike in the blood pressure. This can cause unnecessary risk. Our study has explore what contributes to this rapid spike in blood pressure and how to elevate this. Our findings indicate that the stability of dopamine is reduced under neonatal ward conditions contributing to the spike observed. This can be counteracted by reducing by preparing the dopamine infusion 30 minute prior to administration and changing the infusion every 12 hours.
