What is it about?
Ambulance dispatches are increasing in many developed countries — and Japan is no exception. But unlike other nations, Japan has seen some unusual ups and downs in ambulance dispatch numbers since around 2003. In our study, we found that these swings are linked to changes in macroeconomic indicators.

Why is it important?
We demonstrated for the first time that the number of ambulance dispatches is affected by macroeconomic conditions. This suggests that monetary and fiscal policies may have an impact on trends in ambulance use.
