What is it about?

An approach to estimating the concentration of fluoroquinolones based on their sorption and preconcentration by magnetic solid-phase extraction on magnetite nanoparticles modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide cations (CTAB) or polyethyleneimine cationic polyelectrolyte (PEI), and the fluorimetric determination of these preparations is proposed.

Why is it important?

Fluoroquinolones are synthetic antibiotics with a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity to both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and intracellular pathogens. The high bioavailability and effectiveness of their action led to the widespread use of fluoroquinolonesin clinical and veterinary practice. The growth of bacterial resistance to fluoroquinolones in many countries is the main reason for the need in the control their concentrations in water and food.

Perspectives

This approach can be applied to preconcentration and determination of other antibiotics and biologically active substances.
