What is it about?
To understand if consumption of the mollusk Anadara tuberculosa could represent a risk to populations along the South American Pacific coast, we used genomics to analyze Vibrio species isolated from these organisms. We found a variety of Vibrio species, some of which contained antibiotic resistance genes and virulence factors that could represent risk to the community.

Why is it important?
There are very few studies regarding microbial communities associated with foods consumed by local and marginalized populations, such as those living along the Pacific coast of South America. This information can serve as basis for future assessment of risks and strategies for prevention of disease outbreaks.
