We reveal the role of two factors associated with meiotic chromosome axes, Hop1 and Mek1, in choosing the homologous chromosome over the sister chromatid as a template for repairing meiotic DNA breaks. The evolutionary conservation of Hop1 from yeast to human highlights its importance in recombination template choice.
