What is it about?
A candidate vaginal microbicide, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (BCD), protected 90% of rhesus macaques from high-dose intravaginal SIV challenge. However, upon a second exposure of BCD and SIV led to 75% of the same animals becoming infected. Intravaginal SIV exposure in the presence of BCD appeared to sensitize the animals to subsequent infection, reducing the efficacy of the drug.
