What is it about?
Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) are specific for HIV-1 and cannot be used in SIV macaque models for HIV/AIDS. This class of drugs is one of the most prescribed in combination antiretroviral therapy. We developed a new chimeric virus in which the reverse transcriptase (RT) coding region of SIV was replaced by HIV-1 RT, called RT-SHIV. This allows us to study NNRTIs alone and in combination with other drugs in SIV macaque models.
