What is it about?

This paper extensively studies the activity on crystalline cellulose of different mixtures of the exocellulase Cel48A and the processive endocellulase Cel9A and shows that the activity of cel9A acting alone on bacterial creates a substrate that is hydrolized better by Cel48A then bacterial cellulose. Furthermore treatment of bacterial cellulose with Cel9A followed by treatment with Cel48A creates a material that is better hydrolized by additional Cel9A.

Why is it important?

Synergism between cellulases is very important to get the maximum rate and extent of crystalline cellulose and this paper gives new insights into how synergism occurs.
