What is it about?

Coastal marine bacteria are not known because everyone cares of pathogens from urban contamination. Instead, they are very diverse and functionally important, as they carry out fundamental processes such as elemental cycling, degradation of organic matter, photosynthesis, etc. We here investigate these marine bacteria and find out that the rarer ones are also th more active, surprisingly so, and these can be the one that will survive in a changing ocean.

Why is it important?

Bacteria are everywhere, yet little is known about them. We here describe who they are and show that they are active, in the Gulf of Naples, which can be considered as a condensed example of a coastal area, with clean areas close to industrial-affected and urban-polluted sites.

Perspectives

This article has stemmed from my last PhD student's research work and it was a hard training to nail her down to what is essential about the data. Also, it has been fun to collaborate and coordinate the other members, all with their expertise and contribution.
