What is it about?

This work investigated the isotopic composition of gas like helium trapped in tiny vesicles in deep diamonds, coming from the mantle transition zone (~410-660 km below our feet) that separates the upper and the lower mantle. Results show that there is a signal from a primordial reservoir, dating from the formation of the Earth, residing in the deep mantle, which mix with the recycling of oceanic crust happening in the upper mantle.

Why is it important?

This is the first direct proof of the existence of such primordial reservoir, unaffected by any contamination.

Perspectives

I was really glad to be part of this project that has been directed by Suzette Timmerman. This was a great opportunity to participate in a big-picture research project, and Suzette has made a great job at leading the project to an incredible end with great findings!
