What is it about?

Arachinoid cells form part of the blood-CSF barrier. Until this work the transporters on them had not been examined and neither had theri influence on drug disposition.

Why is it important?

Drugs are administered in the CSF and drug concentrations here are used as a surrogate for brain concentrations. In mouse Pgp and BCRP were found in these cells. The cells also expressed other transporters and drug metabolizing enzymes.

Perspectives

Many drugs including chemotherapeutics are administered intrathecally, drug transporters in arachinoid cells could limit / influence drug egress from CSF. Knowing the transporters in these cells is important for exposure calculations.
