What is it about?

Accurate surveillance of physical activity among children and youth has important policy implications. Research has shown the health and other benefits for children to meet recommended physical activity guidelines. In this paper, we compare Report Cards Grades of 10 common indicators of physical activity among children and youth from 9 countries.

Why is it important?

Our study clearly shows that despite the universal call, and the need for reliable data from countries with low-to-medium HDIs, there is a concerning dearth of data and/or information about the levels of physical activity among children and youth from these countries. We also demonstrate, based on the limited available data, that physical activity levels in these countries are lower than desired, and may get worse if nothing is done. We highlight similarities in challenges among the nine countries, thus establishing the basis for generic collaborative research or policy initiatives in addressing physical inactivity among children and youth.

Perspectives

Writing this article provided me with endless opportunities for leadership and collaboration. It has linked senior graduate students, early career academics and senior scientists from diverse backgrounds. We hope that our paper generates interest among researchers, potential funders and other key stakeholders to prioritize data collection in resource-limited countries.
