What is it about?

The training and match loads and player wellness (sleep, fatigue, soreness, stress and mood) of under-18 Australian football players were followed over the 24-week 2014 competitive season. The higher the load over the week (1-week load) the lower the player wellness. Further, within a session a moderate amount of load was linked to optimal wellness. This shows load across the week and in individual sessions is important with overall player management and the reduction of negative outcomes.

Why is it important?

Monitoring load within individual sessions and across the week is important in understanding how players cope with the demands of training and competition. Quantifying load and wellness at this level can help to optimize player management and help to reduce the risk of adverse events, such as injury.

Perspectives

An interesting study where we helped to identify load and wellness in the elite junior population of Australian football. Previously, investigations have been in other team sports or at the elite senior level (i.e. Australian Football League).
