What is it about?

Why people engage in physical activity might change with age. We have looked at the literature to identify what motivates and the barriers middle-aged and older adults encounter when being physically active. We look at the differences and similarities between these two age groups.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that there are differences between these two age groups as to what motivates them and the barriers they encounter to participate in physical activity. These difference need to be taken into consideration when people are trying to influence physical activity.

Perspectives

In the article, we tried to summarise the literature on the subject for these two age groups. I hope it will be of use to health professionals and physical activity promoters to make them aware of the broad characteristics which might influence the uptake of physical activity or motivate its uptake.
