What is it about?
The literature on high energy, impulsive noise has tended to neglect the annoyance effects of building vibrations, even though vibrations have been shown to influence indoor annoyance ratings of railway noise and passenger comfort in aircraft cabins. This study presents evidence that vibrations affect indoor annoyance ratings to sonic booms.

Why is it important?
This work concerns the public acceptability of quiet supersonic flight, which depends not only on sound levels at the ground, but also induced building vibrations and contact-induced rattle sounds. Based on these laboratory results and others, sonic boom public acceptability surveys will assess annoyance due to structural vibrations and contact-induced rattle sounds.
