What is it about?
Muddy sediments made up of clay-sized particles consist of a colloidal suspension of microscopic, irregularly shaped platelets. Depending on the electrolytic conditions, the platelets may align edge-to-face (resulting in high porosity muds), or they may align face-to-face (resulting in muds with a higher bulk density). This paper demonstrates the relation of acoustic properties to sediment mircrostructure.

Why is it important?
The micro-structure of fine-grained sediments can be inferred from measurements of acoustic properties.
