What is it about?
We demonstrate how Recurrence Plots (RP) and Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) can be used to formulate the Delay Vector Variance (DVV) method and expand it with additional nonlinear metrics. Using this theory we can create a large number of nonlinearity tests that can be used in many situations. The new tests, named DVRQA, have some advantages over previous techniques. As an example we introduce the detection & characterisation of seismic airgun detonations in Passive Acoustic Monitoring.

Why is it important?
This technique can be used in many different problems: from the damage detection of materials using ultrasonic inspection to the detection of seismic airgun surveys and distinguishing these events from periodic whale sounds.
