What is it about?

This paper reviews the role of sound and acoustics in the whole life cycle – from planning, design, construction, to operation and maintenance of the building as indicated by different green and sustainable building assessment standards. Additionally, it highlights the role of pre- and post-occupancy acoustical measurements to evaluate the discrepancy between anticipated performance and actual performance.

Why is it important?

In cities people spend most of their time in buildings. People‘s indoor activities produce and are affected by different types of sounds. This review showed that acoustics and noise would affect around 4 to 7 percentages of the total score in the green building assessment schemes developed and adopted in Hong Kong, Macao, and China. The review also found that the number of green building-related projects in this region has increased continuously in the past few years and China has become one of the largest markets for certified green building projects.

Perspectives

I hope this article can shed light on the understanding of acoustic comfort in building design and assessment. The article also argues that it is necessary to conduct post-occupancy surveys and acoustical measurements in green buildings in this region.
