What is it about?
We reviewed the extant literature on noise in restaurants and presented the results of noise measurements and a questionnaire survey on perceived noisiness and other factors that might affect customer satisfaction in a number of Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong and Macao. We identified perceived noisiness due to services to be one of the factors that explained customer satisfaction.

Why is it important?
In cities, dining out is one of the most popular social activities. Hence, it is crucial to understand the expected noise levels in restaurants and how people react to different noises in restaurants. Our results showed that customer-contact employee behaviors significantly influenced customer satisfaction in restaurants, followed by the quality of food & beverage. Perceived noisiness - particularly service noise also affected customer satisfaction.
