What is it about?
The paper presents and experimentally verifies an original method of mesoscopic time domain fluorescence molecular lifetime tomography, based on an asymptotic approximation to the fluorescence source function, which is valid for early arriving photons.

Why is it important?
For the first time, a new method of fluorescence molecular lifetime tomography based on the asymptotic approximation of the fluorescence source function is verified experimentally by reconstructing a phantom with a fluorophore.
Perspectives
In the future, the new method of fluorescence molecular tomography is planned to be used for small animal imaging in order to visualize the spatial distributions of fluorescence lifetime.
