Seed-derived plants of Sagittaria trifolia

What is it about?

To clarify the growth and reproductive success of seed-derived Sagittaria trifolia individuals emerging at different times within a season, we sowed seeds on May 16, June 16, and July 22, 2010, and allowed them grow in pots under shaded and non-shaded conditions. As sowing time was delayed, so too was the appearance of the first inflorescence. Additionally, the number of inflorescences, fruits, and seeds produced by non-shaded plants significantly decreased with sowing time. Total dry weight was significantly greater in non-shaded than in shaded plants; July-sown, shaded plants grew very poorly.

Why is it important?

Even in shaded groups, except for July-sown plants, most plants set seeds. Therefore, when addressing weed control in paddy fields, one should keep seedlings in mind, in addition to plants grown from tubers.
