What is it about?

We conducted a study using an audio computer‐assisted structured interview (ACASI) to asses HIV risk factors among blood donors in four large cities in Brazil.

Why is it important?

Our data point to a need to improve blood donors' compliance with predonation screening, since many cases and even a measurable proportion of controls disclosed deferrable risk behaviours on the postdonation ACASI.

Perspectives

The risk factors we identified in this study suggest that there are many routes whereby HIV continues to be transmitted in Brazil. Information about modes of HIV transmission and nontransmission still need to be better developed and communicated not only among blood donors, but to the Brazilian population as a whole.
