What is it about?
We study international collaborations of scientists working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory - one of the most important "big science" facilities in the USA. We find that the barriers to international collaborations in this facility - that has been designed with the purpose of fostering collaborative research - are similar to those found in other settings of scientific teamwork.

Why is it important?
The barriers to international collaboration can be overcome if a research team includes scientists who are affiliated simultaneously to multiple kinds of organisations - e.g. universities and government labs. Those scientists have better skills and the right mindset to work in heterogeneous teams.
Perspectives
Policy makers investing big science to enable the participation of their region or country in an international scientific community, should build upon the preexisting networks of scientists residing in universities and research laboratories located in its regional or national context.
