What is it about?
This article briefly reviews the many ways in which work is of deep importance, and articulates why we should consider how to use non-market institutions such as labor unions to enhance the benefits of work for individuals and communities. However, there is a not a consensus on the desired public values about work, nor on the best ways for creating public value relating to work. This article helps explain those differing perspectives.

Why is it important?
Work is too important to be left completely in the hands of the market and managers, so we must consider different ways to improve the nature of work. Differing perspectives on this important issue, however, are rooted in very different values. It's important to understand the importance of those underlying values to improve dialogue.
