What is it about?
We succeeded in developing an ON1–OFF–ON2 fluorescence sensor for acetate anions by preparing 9,10BtDSPUA, having double phenylurea groups at positions 9 and 10 of the anthracene ring, and using photoreaction dynamics, including the excited state intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction mechanism.

Why is it important?
While the fluorescence of 9,10BtDSPUA (ON1 state) was quenched in the presence of low concentration of acetate anions (OFF state), fluorescence enhancement occurred by the addition of high concentration of acetate anions (ON2 state). This study is the first example of an ON1–OFF–ON2 fluorescence sensor for detection of acetate anion concentrations.
