What is it about?

In this manuscript, we report on the efficacy of Aloe Vera as an alternative for the management of oral lichen planus. The previously conducted systematic reviews assess the whole picture including all interventions but this review narrow the scope to one of the promising new interventions with almost no adverse effects or contraindications.

Why is it important?

This is significant because most of the well known other treatment modalities including corticosteroids “the gold standard”, calcinneurin inhibitors or retinoids are associated with adverse effects. The previously conducted systematic reviews assess the whole picture including all interventions but this review narrow the scope to one of the promising new interventions with almost no adverse effects or contraindications especially that a considerable number of patients complaining from oral lichen planus, also suffer from diabetes mellitus or liver diseases which are contraindications for the corticosteroids. In addition, it will be more acceptable for the patient to be treated with drug extracted from natural plant than drugs like corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors. Hope this systematic review will help other practitioners in their clinical decisions and in conducting new randomized clinical trial in this field.
