What is it about?

Several studies have shown emotional impairments in individuals with obesity, specially when binge eating disorder is present - ingestion of large portions of food in a short period of time. However, it is not well known which specific abilities might be impaired. The present paper reviews the latest studies to understand these relations and emotional impairments in individuals with obesity, with or without binge eating disorder.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that an emotional avoidance style may occur in individuals with obesity, modulating later responses of emotion regulation. These findings are central to understanding the disease and improving treatment.

Perspectives

I hope this article puts obesity into perspective. Individuals with obesity are often misunderstood and discriminated against because of their eating behavior. This article points out that obesity is, in fact, also associated with emotional impairments that might perpetuate maladaptive eating behaviors, and that treatment must include psychological interventions side by side with nutritional education.
