What is it about?
We demonstrate a green orchid mainly acquires C from decaying litter through typical orchid mycorrhizal fungi. It is now revealed that orchids can thrive in deeply shaded forest understories even without fungal shifts, although mycoheterotrophic evolution in the Orchidaceae is often triggered by a mycorrhizal shift.
