What is it about?
The evolutionary pathway leading to full mycoheterotrophy exploiting saprotrophic fungi remains largely unknown. Here we provide multifaceted evidence that a photosynthetic orchid acquired carbon fixed in past decades (14C-enriched bomb carbon) from wood via saprotrophic fungi, indicating a novel evolutionary pathway for full mycoheterotrophy.
