What is it about?
Ferns appear in the fossil record some 200 million years before angiosperms, but they exploded in diversity only after angiosperms emerged to dominate the forest canopy in the Cretaceous period. We show that evolution of stomatal blue-light sensitivity in modern ferns helped them to exploit the shady habitat beneath angiosperm forest canopies, fueling their Cretaceous hyper-diversification.
