What is it about?
Tree responses to altered water availability range from immediate (e.g., stomatal regulation) to delayed for years (e.g., crown size adjustment). The underlying mechanisms of the so-called legacy effects are poorly understood so far. We explain why pine trees take four years of time to reduce their radial stem growth rates after being exposed to a water shortage.
