Savannas are increasingly threatened by land clearance for agriculture, changes to fire and herbivory, climate change and rising atmospheric CO2. We argue that these impacts will differ among savanna regions in Africa according to the characteristics of the trees and grasses in each place. Understanding these characteristics will be vital for managing savannas in a changing world.
