What is it about?

We demonstrate that programmed cell death in maternal pericarp tissues of the developing barley grains is essential by providing space and supporting the growth of the endosperm and embryo, and thereby determining seed size. As seed size/weight is an important trait in cereals, the outcome of our study would be useful for understanding the mechanisms underlying yield formation.
