What is it about?
Certain Basidiobolus species are known to cause infections in humans. We examined reptile droppings collected in South Africa for the presence of this fungal genus, using a selective medium allowing for direct enumeration. Our results demonstrate that gecko droppings collected inside contained viable Basidiobolus units.

Why is it important?
Our results demonstrate that the presence of the fungal genus Basidiobolus can be confirmed in reptile droppings using a selective medium, additionally allowing for quantifying the number of viable Basidiobolus units present. As quantitative data on the environmental abundance of this fungal genus are scarce, monitoring its environmental abundance is important.
