What is it about?
The degradation of ethanolamine improves the fitness of Salmonella in the human intestine. The metabolism of this small molecule generates intermediates that can damage or even kill Salmonella. To protect itself from damaging intermediates, Salmonella encapsulates the enzymes that breakdown ethanolamine in a compartment known as the metabolosome. This work provides insights into how the key enzyme of the pathway is kept active by accessory proteins inside the compartment.
