What is it about?
Human intracellular bacterial pathogens, are required to adapt, persist and thrive in numerous inhospitable environments. Orchestrated gene expression is a requirement for life of such organisms. We review here the surface located, early warning systems of Mycobacterium tuberculosis known as two component regulatory systems, with a particular focus on the environmental sensing component. Concepts of their communication pathways, contributions to pathogenesis and the potential for therapy resulting from their inhibition are emphasised.
