What is it about?
Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important cause of serious diseases. The ability of the microbe to sense and respond to environmental stimuli as a community is believed to be an important facet of its survival and virulence. Here we studied a quorum-sensing system called Rgg1518/Shp158. We showed that this system is important for pneumococcal mannose and galactose metabolism, controls capsule biosynthesis and plays an important role in pneumococcal colonization and virulence.
