What is it about?
A biofilm is a protected bacterial community that, in an infection, renders bacteria difficult to treat with antibiotics. Biofilm formation and subsequent escape or dispersal from the biofilm are critical initial steps in the symbiosis between the bacterium Vibrio fischeri and the Hawaiian bobtail squid. Here, we identify a conserved system that contributes to formation and dispersal of V. fischeri biofilms.
