What is it about?
Conjugative plasmid transfer in enterococci is controlled by extracellular peptide pheromones. In this study we used molecular and genetic techniques to examine the effects of changes in the levels of three key regulatory molecules on the pheromone response. Our data show that the inducibility of donor cells is dependent on endogenous levels of the inducing peptide pheromone C and the inhibiting peptide pheromone I as well as on the endogenous level of the master transcription regulator PrgX.
