What is it about?

The shape and constitution of bioconstructions found in three submerged marine cave of Sicily (Mediterranean sea) were studied in order to trace the modalities and history of their formation, also in relation to the sea level raise during the Holocene, the flooding of these caves and particular environmental conditions inside them, including the input of freshwaters. The importance of imicrobial communitiesin the formation of these elevated (essentially downward facing) structures is outlined, as well as their interactions with animal constituents.

Why is it important?

Observations helps our understanding of the life and interactions of organisms within submarine caves, a habitat still poorly known but in need of protection under EU rules.

Perspectives

the writing of this article was a staring point for the construction of a team of researchers working on caves and particularly on bioconstructions within them, the beginning of a proficuous collaboration.
