What is it about?
Successional shifts in biodiversity and its multiple facets are key drivers of the recovery of tropical forests. We show that functional diversity, once controlling for species diversity, is limited by successional shifts in environmental conditions. Our results indicate that the increasing strength of environmental filtering favors species that compete for light and nutrients in similar ways
