What is it about?

Using specific labelling techniques we were able to identify a type of inflammatory cell (an eosinophil) in the intestinal biopsies of dogs with diarrhoea. The method identified not only intact eosinophils but also those that had been activated (degranulated), which would have been missed by routine staining

Why is it important?

This method shows that the number of eosinophils in intestina inflammation will have been underestimated by older methods

Perspectives

Eosinophils may be more important in intestinal inflammation in dogs than previously believed.
