Why is it important?

Although conducting VTE risk assessments on admission to acute care is now considered best practice, there is a gap in the regular assessment of postoperative patients for possible DVT complications.

Perspectives

This paper highlights gaps in current practice, but also demonstrates potential roles that could be developed for advanced practice orthopaedic nurses in acute care.
